Why commercial chairs are different
A chair used a few times a day at home is used dozens of times a day in a restaurant or cafe, by guests of all sizes. A commercial chair should therefore be chosen for structural durability first and looks second.
What determines durability
| Factor | What to ask or check |
|---|---|
| Frame material and wall thickness | Tube or profile thickness; reinforcement at load points |
| Weld quality | Clean, continuous welds at the joints |
| Paint | Electrostatic powder coating; resistance to scratches and rust |
| Floor glides | Replaceable plastic or felt glides suited to your floor |
| Seat and upholstery | Foam and fabric suited to heavy use; replaceable upholstery |
| Load capacity | The value stated by the manufacturer |
| Warranty | Is scope and duration in writing? |
Tests and standards
In Europe, standards define strength and durability requirements for non-domestic seating, for example EN 16139. You can ask a manufacturer for a test report against such standards. If none exists, ask about internal quality checks and sample production.
Practical checks on delivery
- Rock the chair and look for play in the frame.
- Inspect welds and paint by eye.
- Check that all legs sit flat at the same time.
- Make sure glides and screws are tight.
- For bulk orders, ask for a sample first.
Habits that extend chair life
Regular cleaning, checking screws, replacing worn glides and touching up paint scratches early all help. See our metal chairs manufacturer page too.

Common questions
What is the difference between a commercial and a home chair?
A commercial chair uses a reinforced frame, welds and upholstery built for heavy, continuous use.
How can I tell a chair is durable?
Ask about wall thickness, weld quality, paint type and warranty, and test a sample where possible.
Can I ask for a test report?
Yes. Ask the manufacturer for a report against the relevant standards; if there is none, ask about their quality checks.
